Some Georgia Records (indexes and abstracts)

Welcome to Southern Aspects, a site dedicated to Georgia genealogy. First, let me introduce myself. I'm Joanne Smalley and for over thirty years, I worked as a reference archivist at the Georgia Archives. During that time, I developed a love of genealogy and an appreciation for the history of this State. Now, that I'm retired I continue to do what I love: research Georgia records for genealogical, historical and legal purposes. My only regret is that my family roots are not in Georgia. Ah, if only my ancestors had had the good sense to migrate to this Great State.  But, I digress.

Pour yourself a glass of tea (iced, of course) and sit and visit a spell. If you're interested in political history, check out Scandals for information on one of this State's more outrageous political scandals -- it was a time when the dead voted and three men all claimed to be the rightful governor of Georgia.

If the Colonial era captures your interest, click on the link to Early Settlers to find out a little bit about those men and women who crossed an ocean to establish a Colony in the new world.

Environmental issues? See why the Georgia Legislature named the Right Whale as the official state marine mammal.

If you're a genealogist, novice or experienced, spend a little time poking around the Genealogy section. For those just starting out on the trek, take a look at Family History Research.  As you learn a little bit about methodology and sources, each page will provide a link to the next topic.  For convenience, links to all topics covered may be found on the left.

Over the years, I've encountered records that I thought were just plain interesting and under utilized by researchers. Some of these I've indexed, some I've abstracted -- they are also listed on the left hand side. As time goes on, I intend to add more.

Whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or experienced family history researcher, I hope you will find this site useful.  If you have any questions or comments, or if you would like a price quote for genealogical services, please use the e-mail address at the top of the page.
